The Many Meanings of "Peeps"

Writer: Geri DeaneGeri Deane

The word "Peeps" has taken on many meanings over the years, and as we hop toward Easter, it’s the perfect time to explore its significance—both personal and sweet!

Our Personal Peeps

First and foremost, we all have our own peeps—our inner circle of friends, our BFFs, the people we count on. Whether they’re family, childhood besties, or colleagues who’ve become like family, our peeps are the ones who lift us up, share our laughter, and support us through life’s journey.

Marshmallow Peeps: A Nostalgic Treat

Peeps are the iconic, sugar-coated marshmallow candies, most famously known as yellow chick-shaped treats, that are a popular Easter candy, but also come in various shapes and flavors for different holidays.
The wonderful combination of sweet colored sugar and fluffy marshmallow creates an unforgettable taste experience. PEEPS® Brand Marshmallow Candies are made by Just Born, Inc., a family-owned candy manufacturer.

When Easter rolls around, another kind of Peep makes its way into our lives—

Marshmallow Peeps! These sugar-coated, pastel-colored treats have been a staple in Easter baskets for generations. While today’s Peeps come in a variety of flavors, colors, and shapes (bunnies, chicks, and even seasonal varieties), they weren’t always so diverse.

Growing up, my mom had a special way of enjoying Peeps—she liked them stale! She’d remove the cellophane from the package, letting them harden just a bit before indulging. Something about that slightly crunchy, chewy texture made them even better in her eyes.

One of my favorite annual events is The Occoquan Peeps Show. Every business in town creates a Peeps display -- and you can vote for your favorite as you explore the shops and restaurants about town. Held this year from April 15th-19th.

Baby Chicks: The Original "Peeps"

Speaking of Easter traditions, there was a time when real baby chicks were part of the holiday! I remember buying fuzzy, colorful baby chicks—our own living, chirping “Peeps”—from G.C. Murphy. We’d care for them for a short while before giving them to the Egg Lady, who would raise them on her farm. It was a fleeting, but magical part of childhood, filled with excitement and responsibility.

My Real Estate Peeps

In my world of real estate, Peeps means something special too! My peeps are my clients—whether they’re buying their first home, selling a property, or looking for that perfect beach getaway. Just like friends and family, my real estate peeps trust me to guide them, support them, and make the journey as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
